Card payment fees: mostly a secret

What it costs an NZ business to take a payment, read from each provider's own published pages. The headline finding is still the gap: most of this market publishes nothing.

What is bundled changes the answer. Watch what is bundled. An all-in rate (Stripe, PayPal) covers the gateway AND the acquiring, so the percentage is the whole cost. A gateway-only price (Paystation, Windcave) covers the software that moves the transaction and nothing else: you still need a merchant facility from a bank, and that bank's merchant service fee is charged on top. A $39/month gateway is not cheaper than a 2.65% all-in rate until you have added the bank's cut. This is the same trap as a broadband price that needs a power bundle.

Two things changed the maths recently. Interchange caps fell on 1 December 2025 for NZ-issued cards (in-person credit roughly 0.8% to 0.3%) and applied to foreign-issued cards for the first time on 1 May 2026; the Commerce Commission estimated about $100m a year back to businesses. If your merchant service fee has not moved since 2025, that is a conversation to have with your provider. Separately, the Commission chose NOT to regulate surcharging directly, and the government's promised in-store surcharge ban stalled in legislation, so surcharging remains legal with no confirmed date.
